Sodium sulfide price per ton, per kg and per container
Two grades, one chemistry. Both are 60% active Na₂S flake in 25 kg bags; the difference is the guaranteed iron limit. Every figure below is derived from the per-ton price — 1 MT = 1,000 kg = 40 bags, and one 20ft container loads about 20 MT.
| Grade | USD / MT | USD / kg | USD / 25 kg bag | USD / 20ft FCL | USD / kg active | Specified for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Na₂S 60% flake — standard | $890 | $0.89 | $22.25 | $17,800 | $1.48 | Mining flotation, Kraft pulping, sulfur dyeing, effluent treatment, synthesis |
| Na₂S 60% flake — low iron, Fe ≤ 10 ppm | $940 | $0.94 | $23.50 | $18,800 | $1.57 | Leather dehairing and any process where iron staining of the end product matters |

What FOB does and does not include
FOB covers the goods loaded on board at Jebel Ali or Mersin. It excludes ocean freight, marine insurance, destination terminal handling, import duty and inland delivery.
Sodium sulfide moves as UN 1849, IMDG Class 8, so dangerous-goods surcharges apply and vary by carrier and route — a CFR number cannot be estimated from a standard freight table. Send your destination port and CFR, CIF, CPT or DAP is calculated properly.
What is moving the sodium sulfide price this quarter?
While Na₂S does not have a published daily index, its cost base is shaped by sulfur, energy, and chlor-alkali operating rates. Here is the snapshot for Q3 2026.
📊 Current drivers
Sulfur prices have remained firm through August 2026, supported by tighter global refined sulfur supply from lower refinery runs. This directly feeds the sodium sulfide cost curve, because sulfur is the primary raw material. Energy costs in the Gulf and Turkiye have held steady after the summer peak, keeping production economics predictable.
Demand from the leather and textile sectors in South Asia and Africa remains consistent, while mineral flotation consumption in Latin America and Australia has softened slightly. The net effect is a balanced market with no sharp upward pressure — which is why the FOB levels on this page have held since mid-August.
Outlook for the next 30–60 days: We expect the standard grade to trade in a $880–$910/MT range and the low-iron grade between $930–$960/MT, assuming no major sulfur supply shock or freight spike. Buyers committing to quarterly volumes at current levels are well positioned.
Is the low-iron grade worth $50 a ton to you?
The premium is $50/MT, about 5.6% — $1,000 on a 20 MT container. Whether that is money well spent depends entirely on what iron does to your end product.
Buy low iron (Fe ≤ 10 ppm) if…
- You are a tannery — iron above roughly 15 ppm leaves dark iron-sulfide staining on finished crust that cannot be corrected without downgrading the hide
- You produce light or pastel shades where any discoloration is visible
- Your customer's specification names an iron limit in ppm
- One rejected hide batch costs you more than the $1,000 per container premium — which, for most tanneries, it does
Standard grade is enough if…
- You run mineral flotation — sulfidization does not care about trace iron
- You dose into Kraft white liquor, where the recovery cycle already carries metals
- You precipitate heavy metals from effluent — the iron ends up in the sludge either way
- You use it as a reducing agent in synthesis and your own specification sets no iron limit
Work out what your shipment costs
Pick the grade, enter your tonnage, and the FOB goods value is calculated with containers required, bag count and the cost of the active Na₂S you actually consume.
Based on 25 kg bags at 20 MT per 20ft container. FOB goods value only — freight, insurance, duty and destination charges are quoted separately against your port.
Indicative for budgeting. Send tonnage, grade and destination port for a firm, contractable offer with the TDS and COA format attached.
The cheapest per ton is not the cheapest per kilogram
Sodium sulfide is bought as tonnage but consumed as active chemical. Two offers at an identical USD/MT can differ by several percent in real cost — which is how a cheap-looking quotation turns expensive by the third container.
Step 1 — convert every offer to active content
One metric ton of 60% flake contains 600 kg of active Na₂S. So:
cost per kg active = price per MT ÷ (assay % × 10)At $890/MT that is $1.48 per active kilogram; at $940/MT it is $1.57. Run the division with the assay printed on the certificate of analysis, not the nominal grade on the offer sheet — material that assays 58% is about 3.4% more expensive per active kilogram than the same money at 60%.
Step 2 — subtract the tonnage you throw away
Water-insoluble matter is contracted at 12% maximum. At that ceiling, up to 2.4 MT of a 20 MT container is material you pay ocean freight on and then filter out. Price it as waste plus disposal, not as product — and ask every supplier for their insolubles figure in writing.
Step 3 — compare landed, never FOB
Freight, insurance, terminal handling and duty are charged per container, not per ton, so they fall as a per-ton cost on a full load and rise sharply on part loads. Ask for FOB and CFR side by side to your own port; the gap between them is your real decision.
Why some quotations look far cheaper than these
Headline numbers on trading platforms are frequently for a different product: a lower assay, an unstated iron level, higher insolubles, red flake instead of yellow, or a per-ton figure that assumes you accept the shipment without a batch certificate of analysis or inspection.
Before comparing anything, get four things in writing from each supplier — assay minimum, iron in ppm, water-insoluble maximum, and whether a batch COA and pre-shipment inspection are included. Then convert both offers to cost per kilogram of active Na₂S. That is the only comparison that survives contact with a real shipment.
Three ways to buy — and what changes in each
The prices above are the standard full-container levels. What changes with commitment is not only the number but the schedule, the terms and the priority you get when availability tightens.
Spot container
- Fastest route to a first shipment
- Loading in 7–10 working days ex stock
- T/T — 30% advance, balance against B/L copy
- Full document set and batch COA
Repeat buyer
- Consistent source, so assay does not drift between shipments
- Shipment schedule agreed in advance
- L/C at sight accepted
- Retained samples for your own QC comparison
Annual contract
- Priority loading when availability tightens
- Longer price validity, protected from spot swings
- Extended terms discussed after a shipment history
- Specification locked in writing for the term
Specification behind both prices
A price without a specification is not a price. These are the contracted limits behind $890 and $940.

| Sodium sulfite (Na₂SO₃) | ≤ 2.0% | ≤ 2.0% | Titrimetric |
| Sodium carbonate (Na₂CO₃) | ≤ 0.5% | ≤ 0.5% | Titrimetric |
| Water-insoluble matter | ≤ 12% | ≤ 12% | Gravimetric |

What moves the sodium sulfide price
There is no published index for Na₂S. These are the variables behind the two numbers on this page, and how the levels are maintained.
Cost base
- Sulfur and soda ash — the feedstocks that set the floor
- Reduction energy — energy-intensive, so power tariffs feed straight through
- Origin — plant scale, local demand and export policy differ by country
- Utilisation — turnarounds tighten availability quickly
Specification
- Assay — contracted as a minimum, the basis of every honest comparison
- Iron limit — the $50/MT step between the two grades here
- Sulfite — a tight limit means fresh stock, not aged inventory
- Insolubles — the line between product and freight-paid waste
Freight & terms
- Class 8 surcharges — UN 1849 freight varies by carrier and route
- Destination — port, transit time and local handling
- Incoterm — FOB, CFR, CIF and CPT move different cost blocks
- Payment — L/C and D/P carry bank cost inside the quoted number
How these levels are maintained
- Basis — FOB Jebel Ali or Mersin, 25 kg bags, full container load
- Reviewed weekly, and whenever feedstock or freight moves sharply
- Excludes freight, insurance, duty, inspection and palletising
- Last reviewed
- Validity 1 week from the date of enquiry
