A caustic soda flakes supplier built for Tanzania's industrial buyers
In Tanzania's mining, soap, textile and water-treatment sectors, an uninterrupted chemical supply chain is a competitive advantage, not a luxury. SUHA International delivers a consistent, high-purity supply of caustic soda (sodium hydroxide, NaOH) to Tanzania's industrial centers — from Dar es Salaam and Mwanza to Arusha and Mbeya — so production doesn't stall on a chemical shortage.
Caustic soda — chemical formula NaOH, CAS 1310-73-2 — is a strong alkaline base (pH ≈14 in solution) used for pH control, acid neutralization, saponification and metal processing. We supply three commercial forms: caustic soda flakes (98% NaOH), caustic soda pearls (99% NaOH), and liquid caustic soda (50% solution). Every shipment is inspected before loading and ships with a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis, so quality is never a surprise at the port.
Why Tanzania
Tanzania is one of Africa's largest gold producers and a growing hub for textiles, soap and food processing — sectors that all run on a steady flow of sodium hydroxide. A dependable caustic soda supplier keeps mines, mills and plants running at capacity rather than waiting on a delayed shipment.

Caustic soda price in Tanzania: what determines the number
Caustic soda price isn't one static figure — it moves with feedstock and energy costs, ocean freight, the form you order, and how much you buy. Here's what actually drives it, so a quote makes sense instead of feeling arbitrary.
- Form — liquid (50%) is roughly half water by weight; you pay freight on that water, so for the same delivered NaOH, flakes or pearls are usually cheaper landed unless you already have tank-receiving infrastructure
- Grade — 99% pearls carry a premium over 98% flakes; the gap is usually a few percent, not a multiple
- Incoterm — FOB Jebel Ali/Mersin excludes freight and insurance; CFR and CIF quote a landed number to Dar es Salaam, Tanga or Mtwara
- Order size — a full 20ft container (≈20–25 MT) prices better per ton than LCL or single-bag orders, since freight and documentation are spread over more tonnage
- Packing — 25 kg bags vs. 1 MT jumbo bags changes handling cost, not the chemical itself
- Timing — chlor-alkali energy costs and freight rates shift monthly, so a number quoted in January isn't reliable in June
Per-kg vs. per-ton
Caustic soda is quoted per metric ton in export trade. To get a per-kg figure, divide the per-MT price by 1,000; a 25 kg bag is 25× that per-kg rate plus its share of packing and freight. If a "price per kg" figure you've seen elsewhere looks unusually low, check whether it includes freight, a Certificate of Analysis, and pre-shipment inspection — a bare ex-works number and a CIF Dar es Salaam number aren't the same comparison.
How caustic soda powers Tanzanian industry
A dependable sodium hydroxide supply matters most in the sectors below — with the role NaOH plays in each.
Soap & detergent
The saponification agent that converts fats and oils into soap. 98% flakes give firm bars and consistent batch-to-batch quality.
Mining & gold recovery
Regulates pH in cyanide leaching circuits to maximize recovery, and supports metal and mineral processing and Bayer-process alumina extraction.
Water & wastewater
Neutralizes acidic effluent and precipitates heavy metals to meet discharge standards set by Tanzania's National Environment Management Council.
Pulp & paper
Dissolved into Kraft "white liquor" to separate cellulose fiber from lignin for stronger paper and packaging.
Textile mercerization
Boosts cotton's luster, tensile strength and dye absorption — essential for export-quality fabric, alongside LABSA in the scouring stage.
Food & beverage
Standard for Clean-in-Place systems, removing fats and biofilms from processing lines under TBS hygiene standards.
Application & form matrix
| Industry | Function of NaOH | Recommended form | Key TZ hubs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soap & detergent | Saponification of fats & oils | Flakes 98% | Dar es Salaam, Morogoro |
| Mining & gold | pH control in leaching circuits | Flakes / pearls | Mwanza, Geita, Shinyanga |
| Water treatment | Neutralization & metal precipitation | Flakes 98% / liquid | Nationwide municipalities |
| Pulp & paper | Kraft white liquor | Flakes / liquid | Mufindi, Morogoro |
| Textile | Mercerization & scouring | Flakes 98% | Arusha, Dar es Salaam |
| Food & beverage | CIP cleaning | Pearls 99% (low dust) | Arusha, Dodoma |
| Oil & gas | Gas sweetening | Flakes / liquid | Mtwara, Lindi |

Ports, packaging and delivery across Tanzania
Shipments comply with the IMDG Code (UN 1823/1824, Class 8) and route via Dar es Salaam, Tanga or Mtwara, with inland distribution handled from there.
25 kg HDPE bags
Multi-layer, moisture-resistant with inner PE liner. 1,000 bags (25 MT) per container — best for tanneries, soap plants and distributors.
1,000 kg jumbo bags
UV-stabilized FIBCs with PE liner. 20 bags (25 MT) per 20ft container — best for mining, large mills and water utilities.
Custom packing
1.25 MT FIBCs, palletized units, or liquid caustic soda in IBC/ISO tanks — labelled and documented to your spec.
Local availability for Tanzanian buyers
We're not a walk-in shop inside Tanzania — SUHA International ships from Jebel Ali (UAE) and Mersin (Turkey). For bulk and container-load buyers, that's usually the better economics than a local reseller markup. What we do keep local: buffer stock held near Dar es Salaam, so many orders move faster than a fresh 12–25 day shipment, plus an inland network reaching Mwanza, Arusha, Dodoma, Morogoro and Mbeya with licensed hazmat haulage.
🚢 Dar es Salaam
Primary logistics hub — the majority of NaOH imports, dedicated customs clearance and warehousing.
⚓ Tanga
Serves northern Tanzania's industrial corridor, including sisal processing and agricultural chemical needs.
What a procurement manager actually needs from a supplier
A price list isn't enough on its own — batch consistency, absorbed logistics complexity, and continuity across a 12-month contract matter more.
- COA with every shipment — a fresh Certificate of Analysis for your specific container, confirming NaOH content, iron, carbonate and insoluble matter, not a template
- Dual origin — Turkey & UAE — sourcing from both Mersin and Jebel Ali keeps supply continuous if one corridor is disrupted
- 24-hour formal quote — a bankable FOB/CIF offer with unit price, container value, incoterm, loading port and shipment schedule
- SGS / Bureau Veritas inspection — optional third-party pre-shipment inspection, report issued before balance payment
- Complete export documentation — COA, SDS, commercial invoice, packing list, Bill of Lading, Certificate of Origin, Dangerous Goods Declaration
- One-stop chemical procurement — also supplies soda ash, sodium hypochlorite and calcium hypochlorite
These reflect standards our sourcing network operates to; specific certificates are issued per shipment and available on request.
Safe handling and storage of caustic soda
Caustic soda is a Class 8 corrosive, and Tanzania's hot, humid climate adds a real challenge since NaOH is highly hygroscopic. A full SDS ships with every order; see our complete guide to how to store caustic soda safely for container materials, temperature control and spill response.
Required PPE
Chemical-resistant nitrile or neoprene gloves, full-face splash goggles or shield, chemical-resistant apron and rubber boots.
Storage in tropical climates
Cool, dry, ventilated area; bags sealed and elevated on pallets against moisture absorption and caking. FIFO rotation.
Segregation
Never store near acids, aluminum, zinc or tin — NaOH reacts and can generate flammable hydrogen gas. Provide secondary containment.
