Storing and Handling Caustic Soda in Tropical and Humid Ports
Sodium hydroxide absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide from the air. In humid ports such as Santos, Cartagena or Guayaquil an open or torn bag soon turns lumpy and loses strength, so storage matters as much as purity.
- Keep it dry: store bags on pallets in a closed, dry, ventilated warehouse, never on bare floors or outdoors.
- Keep bags closed: reseal part-used bags at once and use stock first in, first out.
- Keep it apart: separate from acids, aluminium, zinc and ammonium salts.
- Protect people: gloves, goggles or face shield and an apron for anyone handling it, with an eyewash and water supply nearby.
- Dissolve safely: always add caustic soda slowly to water, never water to caustic soda. The reaction gives off strong heat.
- Spills: sweep up dry product into a closed container, then flush the area with plenty of water. Neutralise only small residues, slowly, with a weak acid.
First aid: on skin or eye contact, rinse immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes and get medical help. Caustic soda causes severe burns and eye damage.
