Bulk Caustic Soda for Senegal: NaOH Flakes and Pearls Delivered to Dakar
Content reviewed: 7 October 2026 · SUHA International Trading L.L.C., Dubai & Ankara
SUHA International Trading is a caustic soda supplier for Senegal, exporting from Türkiye and the UAE. We ship sodium hydroxide flakes (NaOH 98%) and pearls (NaOH 99%) in 25 kg moisture-proof bags to the Port of Dakar, mainly from Mersin, with Jebel Ali as a second origin. Minimum order is one full container (1 × 20ft FCL), quoted FOB, CFR or CIF Dakar, with a certificate of analysis and a French-language SDS for every shipment.
Senegal has no chlor-alkali plant of its own, so every tonne of caustic soda used by soap makers, water utilities, edible-oil refiners, mines and chemical plants in the country is imported. Importers and distributors in Dakar buy it by the container, mostly from India, Saudi Arabia, Belgium, Pakistan, China and the Gulf. As a caustic soda supplier for Senegal, our job is to give those buyers a second, shorter supply line from the Mediterranean, with clear documents and a fixed shipping plan.
In French-speaking West Africa the product is sold as soude caustique (en paillettes or en perles) or hydroxyde de sodium. Whatever name your purchase order uses, the product is the same: NaOH, CAS 1310-73-2.

Why Senegalese Buyers Source Caustic Soda from Türkiye
More than 80% of the caustic soda Senegal imported in 2024 came from Asia and the Gulf, according to UN Comtrade data on the World Bank's WITS database. Those containers sail through the Strait of Hormuz, the Red Sea or around the Cape of Good Hope, the routes hit hardest by delays and surcharges in 2026. Our main origin, Mersin, sits on the Mediterranean, on the direct line to Dakar through the Strait of Gibraltar.
| Supply region | Route to Dakar | Risk points on the way | Transit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Türkiye (Mersin) | Mediterranean, Strait of Gibraltar, Atlantic | None of the Red Sea, Hormuz or Cape routes | About 13–18 days |
| Gulf (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE, Oman, Qatar) | Arabian Gulf, then Red Sea and Suez or the Cape | Strait of Hormuz, Bab-el-Mandeb or the Cape | Longer, varies with routing |
| South Asia and China | Indian Ocean, then Red Sea and Suez or the Cape | Bab-el-Mandeb or the Cape | Longest, often with transhipment |
Mersin transit is our port-to-port estimate and is confirmed on each booking.
What a shorter supply line means for your business
Less stock, less cash tied up
When the next container is two to three weeks away on a direct route, you can hold less safety stock in your Dakar warehouse and free working capital.
Fewer delays and surcharges
A route without Hormuz or the Red Sea avoids the war-risk premiums, diversions and rolled bookings that hit Asian and Gulf cargo.
Quick response to big orders
If you win a tender or a customer doubles an order, a Mediterranean origin lets you restock within the same month.
Two origins, one desk
Mersin is the main origin and Jebel Ali is the backup. If one origin is disrupted, the same desk ships from the other.

Caustic Soda Flakes and Pearls for Senegal: Grades and Specifications
We supply two solid forms of sodium hydroxide to Senegal. Both are the same chemical; they differ in purity, particle shape and how they behave in handling. See the full types and grades of caustic soda guide for more detail.
Caustic soda flakes, NaOH 98%
The standard industrial form and the main product Senegal imports. Flakes dissolve quickly, pack densely and suit soap and detergent plants, water treatment, mining reagent preparation and general chemical use. See our caustic soda flakes page.
Caustic soda pearls, NaOH 99%
Small spherical prills with higher purity and less dust. Pearls flow freely and are easy to meter by weight, so they suit automated dosing, cosmetics and laboratories. See our caustic soda pearls page.

Where Caustic Soda Is Used in Senegal
Demand for sodium hydroxide in Senegal comes from a handful of industries. These are the buyers a caustic soda supplier in Senegal serves most often. Each card links to our detailed guide for that use.
Soap and detergent manufacturing
The largest and steadiest use. Soap works in Dakar and the regions turn palm, groundnut and other oils into bar and laundry soap by saponification, and detergent plants use NaOH to neutralise sulphonic acid. Flakes are the usual grade.
Water and wastewater treatment
Utilities and industrial plants use caustic soda to raise pH, control corrosion in pipe networks and treat acidic effluent. Plants dissolve flakes or pearls on site in a make-up tank to prepare the dosing solution at the strength their system needs.
Edible oil refining and food processing
Groundnut oil has long been one of Senegal's main agro-industries. Refiners use dilute caustic soda to neutralise free fatty acids in crude oil, and food plants use it for cleaning-in-place of tanks and lines.
Gold mining and mineral processing
Gold mines in eastern Senegal, around Kédougou, use alkali for pH control in leaching circuits and for carbon elution and regeneration. Phosphate and mineral-sands operations also use it as a process reagent.
Phosphate chemicals and fertilisers
Senegal produces phosphate rock, phosphoric acid and fertilisers. Chemical plants use sodium hydroxide for neutralisation, sodium salt production and equipment cleaning.
Oil and gas
With offshore oil and gas now producing, service companies use caustic soda for drilling-fluid pH control and for removing hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide from gas and fuel streams.
Textiles and garments
Textile finishers use caustic soda to scour raw cotton, mercerise yarn and fabric for strength and lustre, and prepare cloth for dyeing.
Metal cleaning and surface treatment
Workshops and fabricators use hot caustic solutions to degrease steel, etch aluminium and strip paint before coating.
Shipping Caustic Soda to Dakar from Türkiye and the UAE
For Senegal we lead with Türkiye. Mersin is on the eastern Mediterranean, so a container sails west through the Strait of Gibraltar and down the Atlantic coast to Dakar without passing the Red Sea, the Strait of Hormuz or the Cape of Good Hope. Our Dubai desk keeps Jebel Ali as a second origin when it gives the better booking.
| Origin | Route to Dakar | Typical transit | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mersin, Türkiye | Mediterranean, Strait of Gibraltar, Atlantic | About 13–18 days | Regular supply, shortest and most predictable route |
| Jebel Ali, UAE | Red Sea and Suez, or around the Cape | Longer, depends on routing | Backup supply and mixed Gulf cargo |
Transit times are port-to-port estimates and change with shipping-line schedules and transhipment. We confirm the routing and estimated arrival on every booking.
The Port of Dakar
The Port Autonome de Dakar is Senegal's main container port and the sea gateway for Mali's imports along the Dakar–Bamako corridor. Its current depth is about 13 metres. DP World is building a deep-water port at Ndayane, south of Dakar, with a draft of more than 18 metres; it was scheduled in September 2026 for delivery in the third quarter of 2028. Until then, all caustic soda containers for Senegal discharge at Dakar.
Caustic soda moves as dangerous goods (UN 1823, Class 8). We book it with lines that accept Class 8 cargo, issue the IMDG dangerous goods declaration and label every bag and container placard as the code requires. If your cargo continues to Mali or another inland market, your forwarder arranges the onward transit from Dakar.
Importing Caustic Soda into Senegal: Duties, Taxes and Documents
Senegal applies the ECOWAS Common External Tariff (CET). For solid sodium hydroxide, HS 2815.11, the customs duty is 5% of the CIF value. Several levies are added on the CIF value, and VAT of 18% is charged on the total.
| Charge | Rate and base |
|---|---|
| Customs duty (ECOWAS CET) | 5% of CIF |
| Statistical fee (RS) | 1% of CIF |
| WAEMU solidarity levy (PCS) | 0.8% of CIF |
| ECOWAS community levy (PC) | 0.5% of CIF |
| African Union import levy | 0.2% of CIF |
| VAT | 18% of CIF + duty + levies |
Rates as published for Senegal's tariff and community levies. Confirm the final assessment with your licensed customs broker, who files the declaration in the GAINDE customs system. Port handling, COSEC and broker fees are extra.

Caustic Soda Price in Senegal: What Drives It
The caustic soda price a Senegalese importer pays is the FOB price at origin plus ocean freight to Dakar, insurance, and then the duties and levies above. These factors move it most:
- Grade – flakes 98% and pearls 99% are priced separately.
- Origin and route – Mersin and Jebel Ali carry different freight to Dakar, and route disruptions add surcharges.
- Dangerous-goods freight – Class 8 cargo pays a surcharge, and not every line or sailing accepts it.
- Quantity and contract length – multi-container and term contracts are quoted differently from a single container.
- Global chlor-alkali market – energy costs and chlorine demand at producers move caustic soda prices worldwide.

Prices change often, so we keep them on dedicated pages instead of this guide.
Storing and Handling Caustic Soda in Senegal's Climate
Sodium hydroxide absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide from the air. In Dakar's humid coastal climate an open or torn bag soon turns lumpy and loses strength, so storage matters as much as purity.
- Keep it dry: store bags on pallets in a closed, dry, ventilated warehouse, never on bare floors or outdoors.
- Keep bags closed: reseal part-used bags at once and use stock first in, first out.
- Keep it apart: separate from acids, aluminium, zinc and ammonium salts.
- Protect people: gloves, goggles or face shield and an apron for anyone handling it, with an eyewash and water supply nearby.
- Dissolve safely: always add caustic soda slowly to water, never water to caustic soda. The reaction gives off strong heat.
- Spills: sweep up dry product into a closed container, then flush the area with plenty of water. Neutralise only small residues, slowly, with a weak acid.
First aid: on skin or eye contact, rinse immediately with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes and get medical help. Caustic soda causes severe burns and eye damage.

Caustic Soda Supplier Senegal: Frequently Asked Questions
Who is a reliable caustic soda supplier in Senegal?
SUHA International Trading supplies caustic soda to Senegal from Mersin in Türkiye and Jebel Ali in the UAE. We ship NaOH flakes 98% and pearls 99% in 25 kg bags to the Port of Dakar, with a certificate of analysis and a French-language SDS for every shipment. A reliable supplier should publish technical data sheets, state the MOQ and Incoterms clearly and handle Class 8 dangerous-goods booking.
Where can I buy caustic soda in Dakar?
Small quantities are sold by chemical distributors and hardware wholesalers in Dakar. For a full container, importers buy directly from an exporter. We supply caustic soda by the 20ft container, CIF Dakar, to importers, distributors and factories in Senegal.
What is the price of caustic soda in Senegal?
The price of caustic soda in Senegal is the FOB price at origin plus freight to Dakar, insurance, 5% customs duty, about 2.5% in levies and 18% VAT. It depends on the grade, the origin, the quantity and dangerous-goods freight at the time of booking. See our caustic soda price page for current levels, or send your quantity for a dated quotation.
What is the import duty on caustic soda in Senegal?
Solid caustic soda, HS 2815.11, pays 5% customs duty under the ECOWAS Common External Tariff when it comes from outside ECOWAS. Add the statistical fee of 1%, the WAEMU solidarity levy of 0.8%, the ECOWAS levy of 0.5% and the African Union levy of 0.2%, all on the CIF value. VAT of 18% is charged on the CIF value plus duty and levies.
What is the HS code for caustic soda?
Solid caustic soda (flakes and pearls) is classified under HS 2815.11, sodium hydroxide, solid. Senegal uses the ECOWAS tariff, which follows the same six-digit code.
How long does shipping caustic soda from Türkiye to Dakar take?
A container from Mersin to Dakar typically takes about 13 to 18 days port to port, sailing through the Mediterranean and the Strait of Gibraltar. Jebel Ali in the UAE takes longer, depending on whether the line routes through the Red Sea or around the Cape. We confirm the estimated arrival on each booking.
What is the minimum order for caustic soda to Senegal?
The minimum order is one full container, 1 × 20ft FCL. A 20ft container carries about 25 metric tons of caustic soda flakes, which is 1,000 bags of 25 kg.
Caustic soda flakes or pearls: which is better?
Flakes (98%) are the standard, lower-cost choice for soap making, water treatment and general industry. Pearls (99%) are purer, produce less dust and flow freely, so they suit automated dosing, cosmetics and laboratories. Chemically both are sodium hydroxide.
Is caustic soda the same as sodium hydroxide or soude caustique?
Yes. Caustic soda, sodium hydroxide, lye, NaOH, soude caustique and hydroxyde de sodium are all names for the same chemical, CAS 1310-73-2.
Which caustic soda is used for soap making in Senegal?
Most soap makers use caustic soda flakes 98%, dissolved in water to make lye before mixing with oils. Pearls 99% are used where lower dust or higher purity is wanted, for example in fine or cosmetic soaps.
Is caustic soda dangerous goods for sea freight?
Yes. Solid caustic soda is UN 1823, Class 8 corrosive, packing group II under the IMDG Code. It needs a dangerous goods declaration, hazard labels on the bags and placards on the container, and a shipping line that accepts Class 8 cargo.
Which documents come with a caustic soda shipment to Senegal?
We provide the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, certificate of analysis, Safety Data Sheet in French and English, and the IMDG dangerous goods declaration. The importer's agent issues the BESC cargo tracking note and the broker files the customs declaration in GAINDE.
Do I need an import authorisation for caustic soda in Senegal?
Senegal's environment directorate (DEEC), advised by the national chemicals commission (CNGPC), issues import authorisations for chemical products. Whether your shipment needs one depends on the product and its use, so check with your customs broker. We supply the French SDS and technical data sheet the application asks for.
How should caustic soda be stored in a humid climate like Dakar?
Store the bags on pallets in a closed, dry, ventilated warehouse, away from acids and metals such as aluminium and zinc. Keep bags sealed and use the oldest stock first, because caustic soda absorbs moisture from the air and cakes. Our storage guide covers the details.
Can caustic soda shipped to Dakar continue to Mali?
Yes. Dakar is a main sea gateway for Mali along the Dakar–Bamako corridor. We deliver CIF Dakar, and your forwarder arranges transit and onward transport to Mali or other inland markets.
Why buy caustic soda from Türkiye for Senegal?
Mersin is on the Mediterranean, so containers reach Dakar through the Strait of Gibraltar without passing the Red Sea, the Strait of Hormuz or the Cape of Good Hope. That gives a shorter and more predictable route than most Asian and Gulf supply.
