Yes. Caustic soda, sodium hydroxide and NaOH are the same chemical (CAS 1310-73-2). Lye is a common name for it, especially in soap making. In Serbian it is called kaustična soda or natrijum-hidroksid (Cyrillic: каустична сода, натријум-хидроксид).

Three forms: caustic soda flakes at 98–99% NaOH, caustic soda pearls (prills) at 99% NaOH, and liquid caustic soda (membrane-grade lye) at 32–50% NaOH. Flakes suit most industrial users, pearls suit automatic dosing and low-dust handling, and liquid suits plants with tank storage and continuous dosing.

Packed caustic soda travels by ADR-certified truck from Türkiye through Bulgaria into Serbia (Kapıkule–Kapitan Andreevo, then Gradina–Dimitrovgrad toward Niš and Belgrade). It can also go by sea from Mersin to Thessaloniki or Bar and then by road or rail, or via Constanța and Danube barge to Pančevo, Belgrade or Novi Sad. Caustic soda is UN 1823 (solid) or UN 1824 (solution), Class 8, so every leg runs under ADR or IMDG rules.

Under the Türkiye–Serbia Free Trade Agreement (in force since 1 September 2010) industrial goods such as caustic soda enter Serbia duty-free when a valid proof of preferential origin accompanies the shipment. Serbian import VAT of 20% still applies and is normally recoverable for VAT-registered companies.

The UAE–Serbia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement entered into force in May 2025 and removes or reduces duties on more than 96% of tariff lines. Commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or CMR road consignment note, certificate of origin or preferential origin proof, batch Certificate of Analysis, Safety Data Sheet, and ADR or IMDG dangerous-goods declaration. Third-party inspection (SGS, Bureau Veritas or similar) can be arranged on request.

The company placing caustic soda on the Serbian market must report chemicals imported in quantities of 100 kg or more per year to the Integrated Register of Chemicals (filed between 1 January and 31 March for the previous year), provide a Serbian-language Safety Data Sheet and label, keep import records, and appoint a chemicals advisor when handling hazardous chemicals. Choose flakes for the lowest cost per tonne of NaOH in bags or big bags, pearls when you need free-flowing, low-dust material for precise dosing, and liquid when you have tank storage and want to avoid dissolving solid NaOH on site. Liquid caustic soda is shipped in ISO tank containers only. The ISO tank can travel by sea to a regional port and then by road or rail to your site, and it is discharged directly into your storage tank.

Caustic soda flakes and pearls keep about 24 months and liquid caustic soda about 12 months when stored sealed in a cool, dry place away from acids. NaOH slowly absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide from the air, so keep bags closed and tanks sealed.
